The Power of print

This course explores the history and practice of printmaking as a tool for communication across time and space, cultures and nations. Tracing a line from Johannes Gutenberg's historic commercialization of movable type to contemporary letterpress artists, students understand how the printed word has been instrumental in forming communities, movements and revolutions. Students experience the power of the print through learning typography, typesetting, inking and how to use pressure to create impressions on paper. This general education community engagement course serves students from across the college, engaging them in research & problem-solving through design; culminating in the creation of hand-printed posters for local non-profit organizations in education, health, sustainability and the arts. In 2021, the final poster project asked each student to visually communicate a goal from the United Nations SDGs in a poster for our long-time community partner IDEAS For Us.
