Students at Rollins College install Flock at the Cornell Fine Arts Museum in 2016

Started in 2015 during a residency at Karen Kunc’s Constellation Studios in Nebraska, Flock is a collaborative community art project that encourages participants to see their daily interactions with neighborhood birds as opportunities for creative expression and interpersonal connection.  It’s comprised of interactions between participants and myself during birdwatching and printmaking activities, and takes physical form in the shape of over 200 hundred relief prints, in a variety of bird silhouettes, all inked and printed by communities across the United States and one in Eastern Iceland. The bold patterns and rich colors represent each participant’s creative choices, but together the birds in Flock are a collective expression of our relationship with nature and an example of how creativity can strengthen communities. You can learn more about the project and how to bring it to your neighborhood by emailing Rachel.

Example schedule for Flock:

Before workshop: Exhibition of the prints, artist’s talk

FLOCK being installed at Central Print In St. Louis, August of 2019

FLOCk at Central PRint in St. Louis, August 2019

Central Print takes its name from its location at the center of the revitalized historic neighborhood in St. Louis known as Old North. This community letterpress studio functions as a creative space for residents as well as a printing museum. As a resident of Orlando, FL where most structures seem to have been built during or after the Disney-fueled boom of the 1970’s, I was struck by the beautiful historic quality of the architecture of the Old North neighborhood which saw its boom during an expansive growth period in the 1870’s……
